CUIABA, Brazil -- Chile capitalized on a sluggish start by Australia to earn a 3-1 win in their World Cup opener on Friday, with Alexis Sanchez carrying over his prolific form for Barcelona with a goal and assist for the dangerous tournament outsiders. Sanchez -- a potential star of the World Cup -- poked home from close range in the 12th minute, before setting up Jorge Valdivia barely a minute later for the playmaker to finish from the edge of the area. A young Australia team, written off by most before a ball had been kicked, looked in danger of falling apart but the experienced Tim Cahill brought them back into the game with a trademark header in the 35th. Cahill, dominant in the air throughout, had several chances to equalize before and after halftime as Chile slipped off the pace in muggy conditions in Cuiaba. But a drilled, low shot by substitute Jean Beausejour settled the match in the second minute of injury time, sending the Chilean bench running onto the pitch and making fans set off fireworks. Chile moved level with Netherlands, which thrashed Spain 5-1 earlier Friday, and has a chance to eliminate the reigning champions when they meet in their next Group B game on Wednesday. "They have a superlative history in (major tournaments) so we definitely will have to play better than we did today," Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli said. "It will certainly be an electrifying game." Boasting its best ever squad for a World Cup, Chile has been strongly tipped by many -- including Pele -- to go far in Brazil despite being thrown in the same group as two of Europes top teams. And the Spanish, ripped apart by the Dutch in Salvador, will not be relishing playing Sampaolis side with their title defence on the line. Especially with Sanchez in this form. The 25-year-old forward is coming off his best season at Camp Nou -- having scored 21 goals, 19 in the league -- and he was too much for a flimsy Australia defence in the first half. Sanchez was on hand to guide in a close-range finish inside the near post after Australia captain Mile Jedinak failed to head clear Charles Aranguizs cross. The celebrations had hardly died down when Sanchez span his marker and laid the ball across for Valdivia to finish high into the net from 20 yards (meters). "Early on, we were probably just overawed by the whole thing," Australia coach Ange Postecoglou said. "In the end, we gave away a two-goal start and thats what killed us." It was already looking like a damage-limitation exercise for the beleaguered Socceroos, the lowest-ranked nation in Brazil. The raucous Chilean fans were regaling their teams crisp passing with chants "Ole" and a no-look backheel from Sanchez highlighted his confidence. But Chiles momentum was punctured when Cahill, renowned for his tremendous jumping ability, leapt above diminutive marker Gary Medel to thump home a header from a right-wing cross. He had a header ruled out for a marginal offside and squandered other chances before Beausejour ended Australias hopes of a comeback. "They got in twice," Cahill said. "(But) after that you could see their legs were going. We knew we could get something out of this game. We stood up strong. Its just unfortunate, not a lot went our way tonight, and it showed." Capping a satisfying night overall for Chile was the sight of star midfielder Arturo Vidal starting and playing 59 minutes on his return from knee surgery. "He was very good," Sampaoli. "His knee is good." Red Auerbach Jersey . After a first half in which he thought "the lid was on the basket," the Toronto Raptors coach watched his squad mount a second half surge to defeat the Cleveland Cavaliers 98-91. Reggie Lewis Jersey . Burkes Flames are one of several teams involved in heavy trade speculation going into next Wednesdays 3pm et deadline, with the most prominent name in play being forward Michael Cammalleri. http://www.celticsofficialsstore.com/kids-marcus-morris-celtics-jersey/ .com) - Calgary Flames forward Johnny Gaudreau has been selected as the NHLs Rookie of the Month for December, the league announced Friday. Jayson Tatum Jersey . -- New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has no concerns about the health of shortstop Derek Jeter, who was limited to 17 games last season due to leg injuries. Aron Baynes Jersey . Canada wasnt in the game from the outset. Head coach Dan Church left Calgary in the morning without addressing the players. He told The Canadian Press he felt the organization lacked confidence in his ability to defend the Olympic gold medal in February.BEREA, Ohio - Jim Brown stood alongside Muhammad Ali in the 1960s when the boxing champion protested going to Vietnam. An activist for 50 years, the Hall of Fame running back has never shied away from fighting for anything hes believed in.Brown has been the rare high-profile athlete unafraid to challenge or call for social change. Now, during a time of racial tension and unrest, he has found hope, encouraged by what hes seen from some prominent sports figures. On Friday, the 78-year-old Cleveland Browns great praised NBA superstar LeBron James and NFL players for speaking out and bringing attention to high-profile cases in Ferguson, Missouri, and New York in which black men had fatal encounters with law enforcement. The thing that I feel most about is the emerging of young players that are intelligently protesting what they feel are injustices, their willingness to step up and recognize that there has to be some changes in the methodology of engagement with citizens and police, he said.James and Cavaliers teammate Kyrie Irving were among a group of players who wore I Cant Breathe T-shirts this week in support of the family of Eric Garner, who died in July after a New York police officer placed him in a chokehold while trying to arrest him. Five members of the St. Louis Rams ran onto the field before a Nov. 30 game with their hands raised in a gesture of solidarity for protesters and the family of Michael Brown, killed outside St. Louis.Grand juries in both cities declined to indict either officer, sparking nationwide protests. To Brown, the protests by James, Kobe Bryant and others suggest a sense of perspective and maturity. One of the things that Ive always not liked is the modern players have always concentrated on dancing in the end zone and BS-ing when serious things were going on in this country that needed to be changed, Brown said. So my opinion is that when these young people stand up andd risk their careers, thats a good sign for everything and all of us.dddddddddddd. They have the power of bringing attention to the issues.Brown has been critical of athletes for not using their fame as a platform to address on social issues. He understands the power James has and believes the 29-year-olds courage to step forward can inspire.I think a person like Mr. James is showing himself to be a thinking leader, Brown said, and thats awesome because it takes your high-profile athletes to call attention to and step out so players can follow that lead and create the collective voice.Brown said its imperative for athletes to lead by example. We make a lot of money, we get a lot of notoriety and were living a great life, said Brown, a special adviser with the Browns. But we realize that there are poor people in this country, underprivileged people and patterns that are used by the system that need to be addressed and looked at it in many ways.A three-time MVP, Brown retired from football following the 1957 season, leaving at the peak of his career to pursue an acting career. However, he didnt go to Hollywood simply to make movies. He founded the Amer-I-Can program to help black kids and has been a long-time crusader for racial justice. Hes worked with gang members in Los Angeles.Brown also has had his share of problems. Hes been arrested on various charges and spent four months in jail in 2000 after refusing counselling for a domestic violence charge. Brown remains engaged with civic leaders and believes change, though slow, can take place. But it will take insight and dedication.Regardless of what else we do, young black men in this country have to understand that they have a responsibility. They cannot be the enemy in their own neighbourhoods and usurp the effort of good people that are trying to make things work.___AP NFL websites: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL Cheap Soccer Jerseys Authentic Wholesale Hockey Jerseys Nike NFL Jerseys China Cheap Nike MLB Jerseys China Wholesale Baseball Jerseys China Wholesale College Jerseys Cheap Jerseys From China Wholesale Jerseys Near Me Cheap Jerseys Online Cheap NFL Jerseys Authentic Cheap Nike NFL Jerseys Authentic Cheap Soccer Jerseys China Cheap NCAA Jerseys Authentic Cheap Nike NBA Jerseys Cheap NHL Jerseys Authentic MLB Jerseys China Cheap Jerseys From China Cheap NFL Throwback Jerseys Cheap Nike NFL Jerseys Cheap NFL Jerseys China ' ' '
